- You can view message activity for messages that have been sent in the last 12 months in public channels with at least 50 members.
- By default, owners and admins can view message activity for their workspace or Enterprise Grid org.
Can anyone see your Slack messages?
In brief, yes, but they can’t actively read your messages as you send them. Slack allows employers to download and export Slack conversations, whether they’re public or private, into zip files. Of course, they must comply with the law before downloading any private data from their employees.

It is also possible to search for individual people and see how many messages they’ve sent in the last 30 days and for how many of those days they’ve been active.

You can check to see who is online in a particular channel! If you click into the channel info from the i icon in the top right of the Slack window, the folks online will be listed with green dots beside their name.
How do you tell if Slack is being monitored?
You can see the analytics for yourself by going to yourworkplacedomain.slack.com/analytics. Paid plans offer more insights, but only about public channels. It’s important to remember that when you’re on Slack, you’re using a service provided by your company, not your own personal communication channel.

Is Slack confidential?
Since Slack is primarily a web app, it uses HTTPS encryption just like any legitimate website that collects potentially sensitive data. Though this means data is encrypted both en-route and while at rest on Slack’s servers, its safety is entirely at the mercy of the platform and its own security protocols.
How does Slack analyze data?
On the free version of Slack, you can see a high level view of your workspace’s activity from the Overview tab of the analytics dashboard.
- Select Tools from the menu, then click Analytics.
- To view data for the entire history of your workspace, click Last 30 days in the top-right corner to adjust your data range.
Can Slack admins see deleted messages?
Slack does not archive deleted messages or provide a way to recover deleted information. Once a user deletes a particular message, that message is gone forever. However, Slack may still retain information about deleted messages that can be included in an electronic discovery export.
Can New Slack users see old messages?
If you do not want the new member to see old messages, it will create a completely new private Slack channel with the same members in it but no message history. Otherwise, the new member will be able to see channel history and everything saved in it.
